Old Police Precinct
Located within the Precinct are three historically significant buildings:
- The original Police Sergeant’s residence
- The former Police Office
- The old jail
These structures have undergone extensive restoration in recent years, preserving their unique architectural features while offering valuable insight into the working and living conditions of police officers from the early 1900s through to the mid-20th century.
Visitors can explore these heritage-listed buildings and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges of daily life faced by law enforcement during that era.
The buildings are open for public viewing daily from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, or outside of these hours by prior arrangement. For bookings or further information, please contact the Great Beyond Visitor Centre at 08 9031 1361.

Windarra Mine Site Lookout
Take sightseeing to a new level!
Located 28 kilometres north-west of Laverton, this is the site of the Windarra Nickel Mine, made famous during the Poseidon Nickel Boom of 1969.
The lookout provides panoramic views over the famous site and its main mining structures that remain standing.
It is also the perfect vantage point to experience a stunning desert sunset over the nearby lake, famously known as ‘The Boats’.

Laverton Cemetery
Laverton’s cemetery is located five minute’s drive south of the township, off Mount Weld Drive. Here you will find a social and family historical snapshot of the town dating from the late 1890s to present day.
Walking through the Laverton Cemetery you will find that the volunteer organisation, Outback Grave Markers, has installed plaques and QR codes identifying all the graves and forgotten souls. Life in the early years of the town wasn’t easy and many graves show early deaths due to mining accidents and illnesses, typhoid and dysentery, a high mortality of children and mothers, alcoholism, murder and suicides.
In surrounding ghost towns and former mining camps including Mt Morgan, Hawkes Nest, Red Flag Well and Burtville, many lonely bush graves are now also marked.

Lonely Bush Graves
Lonely graves refer to small burial sites located outside of recognised cemeteries. In and around Laverton, there are multiple sites, including:

Laverton Aboriginal Art Gallery
Explore the Laverton Aboriginal Art Gallery and discover traditional stories and art by the local Wongatha people. With an inspiring range of wooden artefacts, boomerangs, hand-painted emu eggs, woven baskets, hand-dyed silk scarves, and more, there’s plenty to take in.
